Clover or trefoil are common names for plants of the genus Trifolium (Latin: tres "three" + folium "leaf"). There are approximately 300 species of clover. They are mostly concentrated in the temperate Northern Hemisphere but can be found in other regions as well including South America and Africa.
Clover is in the legume (pea) family Fabaceae. It fixes nitrogen in the soil which is beneficial for agriculture. It is also a common ground cover plant found in lawns and fields.
